Last spring I had the pleasure of experiencing SXSW for the first time, thanks to SXSW’s Community Fund Grant Award . Reel Girls, the non-profit that I serve as the Executive Director had the chance to head down to Austin to be part of the annual week where the global talent pool of hustlers, thought leaders, activists, artists, entrepreneurs, musicians, and culture shifters convened. The only thing that I knew about SXSW was the music, and was extremely impressed by the gathering of the interactive conference, and the opportunity to network.
Last year was quite an overwhelming experience. The best parts were having a platinum pass, my crew from Reel Grrls, running into friends, and being inspired by strangers. We were able to connect with Meredith Walker from Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls, as well as Madonna Badger founder of Women Not Objects. I definitely felt at home in Austin – it was like a desert Portland. I had a really great time exploring new ideas.
This year I will be returning with a strategy:
- Make connections
- Make media
- Do funny things
If you are headed to SXSW and are interested in connecting around talking shop about:
- The Future is Feminist
- Creative Economy
I will be out hustling in Austin – connect with me via twitter @thenancychang.
